Ford and GM join North American Charging Standard

Another big win for Tesla is on the news as General Motors (GM) and Ford announced that they will be adopting North American Charging Standard (NACS). The NACS, previously known as the Tesla Charging Connector, is an electric vehicle charging standard developed by Tesla. To understand what this means using an analogy: This is like Samsung and Apple announcing that their cellphones will now come with USB-C port.

JPlug.io celebrates and fully supports the adoption of NACS. Our monthly subscription includes free upgrades when needed to our clients. We will offer adaptors for our current installed chargers or a full connector swap when necessary.

History

It’s worth mentioning that both Ford and GM have been developing and promoting the Combined Charging System (CCS). CCS is a very popular charging standard in North America that combines both AC and DC charging capabilities. Many electric vehicle manufacturers, including Ford and GM, use CCS as the standard for their electric vehicle models.

Here are some key points:

  1. General Motors (GM): GM has been a strong proponent of CCS. In 2011, GM joined forces with other automakers, including BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, and Volkswagen, to form the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN). CharIN aimed to establish and promote the CCS as a global standard for fast charging of electric vehicles. GM has continued to support CCS and has included CCS charging capability in their electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
  2. Ford: Ford has also been an active participant in the development and implementation of CCS. In 2012, Ford joined the CharIN consortium, signaling its commitment to the CCS standard. Ford has incorporated CCS charging capability in its electric vehicles, including the Mustang Mach-E, which supports both AC and DC charging using the CCS connector.
  3. After the announcement from Ford and GM, Rivian also joined the movement. These manufacturers are looking to include NACS in the vehicles that will roll out from their factories as soon as 2025.

Benefits

This is a win – win situation for everyone. For electric vehicle drivers, it means that they will have access to Tesla’s Network of Superchargers. The Tesla Superchargers, according to customer reviews, is the most reliable EV Charging Network in north America. For Tesla, experts estimate that this will mean an additional 2 to 3 billion dollar increase in revenue from their charging network.

It’s worth noting that many charging stations in North America offer multiple connectors, providing compatibility with various charging standards. This allows a broader range of electric vehicles to access the charging infrastructure. So, there is nothing to worry about for current EV owners.

Besides, remember that EV drivers charge at home 80 percent of the time or more. If you live in a condominium building, you can take advantage of JPlug.io’s monthly subscription to charge right at your parking space.
